A Soul Mate Reunion
After years of separation, two former lovers, soul mates, broached the gulf of time when one of them took the initiative to be friends again. It wasn't easy, both had been hurt by the other long ago.
There was the chance this encounter could be painful once again. Suspicion, lack of trust, anger, and more held them apart previously. Now it seemed a reunion was the best road to travel. Either the fears would be justified or eliminated. There could be no third choice.
She contacted him first. She wanted to make that first move as a display of honesty in her intentions. She was unsure of what to expect as a result, but at least she was willing to find out.
He was surprised to hear from her. He too, was unsure how to react. Many years had passed between them. He wondered why she wanted to meet with him. He wasn't completely sure meeting her was the right thing to do. Nonetheless, he agreed to meet her on her terms of the arrangement.
When they met, they stood far apart. They looked at each other, trying to fit the physical changes to the person each other once knew so well. It was difficult for both of them to find the right words to speak. Then she spoke first.
"Hi. Thank you for agreeing to meet me."
"Thanks for asking me. You look great and you still have that special smile."
"It's been along time. I don't really know what I want to ask first."
"I do. I want to know how I can keep from losing you again?"
The questions and answers flowed more easily after that initial exchange. They acknowledged the desire to be friends again. It wasn't as easy as they thought it would be, but it wasn't as hard as it could have been either.
Over time, they would discover that it was their friendship that had been the key to their relationship long ago. Somehow back then they lost sight of that essential ingredient between them that formed the magic they once had.
The reunion became a focal point for their renewed friendship. They never became lovers again, that wasn't intended by either, it seems. They did intend to never hurt each other again, to be respectful of each other's needs, to value their friendship very highly.
Soul mates always have that ability to reunite. It may not be exercised or witnessed enough, but it's true.
